I always jump at the chance to test for Adrianna of Hey June (or else I spend months regretting it- I’m looking at you Evans Blazer!). A pattern test is just the push I need to try a more difficult project or to learn a new skill. Hey June patterns are my favorite for great finishes, new techniques, and on-trend style. The Amherst Shirt is no exception.
I’ve hesitated to sew up the popular Cheyenne Tunic. It scares me slightly with all the plackets, buttons, and fancy collar. I’d love to try it when I can set aside the time but until then the Amherst was perfect for getting my toes wet. I love the Love Notions Melody Top as a beginner button-front shirt and I feel like the Amherst is the next step on my way to the Cheyenne.
The Amherst is a button-down shirt with a loose, relaxed fit. It comes in sizes 0-24 and features a separate full-bust pattern piece. The coolest feature is the mind-blowing integrated cuff that’s built right into the sleeve piece. No funny seams showing for a nice clean finish!
The back has a yoke and a pleat for ease in wearing.
I sewed mine up in a linen blend I picked up in LA. I grabbed yards and yards of this fabric because I loved it so much! I have some pants planned with it for spring too. It’s so comfortable to wear and I love the feel against my skin. It has enough body that it was easy to work with but still drapes beautifully.
There are multiple pocket options with this pattern. I was so torn with mine and finally settled on a single pocket. Sometimes the little details take longer to decide on than to actually sew!
I was able to sew this up in an afternoon which I think is fantastic. You know I like to start and finish projects in one sitting or my mind can’t think of anything else. Between the beautiful finishes on the inside and the great tutorial, I learned a few new things and was able to come away from this project feeling like I’d accomplished something grand. I love a quick knit sew but nothing can beat the satisfaction of a gorgeous woven project.
I think this top will pair great with a bright colored pair of jeans for spring. I pulled out my favorite old khakis for this shoot for an easy look that I felt cool and pulled together in all day.
We grabbed these pics after my daughters soccer game one morning and this is what happens when you realize your backdrop is an active wedding reception. I tried to act like it’s totally normal to take pictures with strangers walking in and out behind you! Anything for a good pic!
I just adore this fabric, Tami! Gives the Amherst a really nice and cool vibe.
