Sew Americana Blog Tour 2017

sneak1

I’m excited to be here again for the Sew Americana Blog Tour, year two!  I love everything Katy of Wild and Wanderful does so of course I had to join this tour.  My sister and I had so much fun last year  we jumped on board again in a heartbeat!

americana15

These three have grown so much in the last year and I can’t get over how darn cute they were for this shoot.  Last year my sister and her kids were moving from Alaska to Arizona and stayed here in Utah for part of the summer.  This year they’re here for the summer too and we can’t get enough of these cute cousins!

pair1

My girls sure love doting on these little ones!

edie1

Let’s talk about the outfits!  This teeny one is adorable in Made For Mermaids Evie Suspender Shorts and a Pistachio Top from Sew Like My Mom.  In a classic chambray these shorties are such a staple.  Super cute but so practical too!

edie10

The back of these ties in a bow and really ups the cuteness factor.  I just love little bloomer shorts in the summer!

soph1

I was thrilled when my oldest fell for overalls- she’s all about comfort AND style.  I love the Sydney Romper and Pinafore from Mouse House Creations.  It’s such a classic, sweet style and was perfect for the look we were going for.  I’ll never grow tired of picot trim bias, especially in a gingham!  It’s the fun pop these shorts needed but still keeps them versatile.

soph3

We paired the overalls with a Boo! Designs Sleeved Leotard for a fun vintage look with a modern twist.   She absolutely loves this outfit!  I love that it’s perfect for summer- an outfit she can wear running around the neighborhood with friends or off to a bar-b-que.

morgan1

My other niece is all about comfort and these two pieces will be great to mix and match into her wardrobe.  The Skipper Top from Sew Much Ado is such a staple pattern for my sister and I.  It’s a quick sew and is a great base to show off fun fabrics.  In a red and white stripe, it’s great for the Fourth of July but will still be wearable year round too.

morgan4

She got a pair of Hailey Ruffle Shorts from Made for Mermaids and a Barb’s Headband from Simple Life Pattern Company.  This comfy knit outfit is totally playground approved.

morgan3

Perfect for hiding in the big ‘ol tires at one of our favorite parks!  Isn’t she just darling?!  I feel like as an aunt, I can say these things 😉  She is just pure innocence and joy!

payt2

The last outfit we made for the tour was another one we wanted to be able to mix and match into her existing wardrobe.  These chambray Lilly Shorts from Violette Fields Threads will be great.  I love the pop of red from the bias tape!

payt1

She lives in her Miss Mary Mack (affl. link) tees from Love Notions and I always know I can’t go wrong making her more!  This one in floral and polka dots is definitely my new favorite.  So cute and girly!

pair5

As it often goes these days, I had more fun taking and editing these pics than I did sewing.  So I’m going to leave you with a bit of photo overload and a little wish for ya’ll to have the best holiday weekend!  I’m so grateful for this beautiful, amazing country we live in and for all those who have fought to make it what it is today.

Fighter Tee by Handmade Boy Blog Tour

fighterteaser

Kelly at Handmade Boy is one of the busiest gals I know.  She’s also one of the kindest ladies in the sewing world so it didn’t surprise me one bit that her first venture into pattern making would be for charity.

fighter1

100% of the proceeds from the sale of the Fighter Tee go to benefit the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.  You can pick up your copy for only $5 and know that not only did you get a fantastic pattern but you did your good deed for the day!

fighter13

Tami from Love Notions teamed up with Kelly on this project and drafted this pattern so you know it’s superb!  It’s a loose fitting tee with color blocking on the sides and sleeves.  It makes it perfect for pattern mixing and upcycling!  It comes in sizes 2-12 and is a great unisex pattern.

This little guy absolutely loves this pattern.  I made the palm tee a few weeks ago during the pattern testing and he has worn it any chance he gets.  These will definitely be favorites this summer!

fighter7

This palm tree fabric was an old Girl Charlee purchase that we tie dyed last summer.  I love the summer vibe it has and this pattern was perfect for it.  The black side panels tone it down a bit and totally up the cool factor.

fighter16

The fabrics for this version came from Raspberry Creek Fabric.  I used the Shark Fin Wave paired with a solid navy.  Charlie has had his eye on these shark fins since he saw the strike offs and has been begging for his very own shark tee.  Of course, he had to wear his shark tooth necklace with it!

fighter2

I’m excited to be joining so many friends in spreading the news about this amazing pattern.  Make sure you check out their cute versions for even more fun inspiration.

Monday: The Wholesome Mama, My Creative Room, Wild & Wanderful

Tuesday: Doodle Number 5, A Jennuine Life, Sew Sophie Lynn

Don’t forget to head over and get your pattern.  You can’t beat supporting a great cause and getting a darn cute pattern in return!

For this last stop I’m sharing a few more girls swimsuits and some tips for modifying your favorite non-swim patterns to work for swimwear.

Summer is a time of family and we love that we get to spend time with these cute cousins from Arizona.  My sister loves to sew as much as I do (with three kids under 5 she just doesn’t get to do it as often as she’d like!).  I love when she’s in town and we can spend our days sewing together.  This tour was a fun chance to make coordinating suits for all the girl cousins!

edie3

This little munchkin is looking darling in her teeny weeny polka dot bikini.  My sister used the free Classic Maillot Swimskirt from our sponsor Call Ajaire.  It includes the attached swim bottoms!  For the top she used the Made By Rae Flashback Skinny Tee and brought in the sides a bit and added a band to the cropped bottom.

edie2

soph6

My oldest has such similar tastes to my own.  I giggled when I asked her what kind of suit she wanted for this last one and she described exactly what I want my next suit to be!  She’s looking hip in highwaisted Cosi Swimsuit bottoms from SewPony paired with a modified Boo! Designs Sleeved Leotard.

soph7

For her top, I simply cropped the bottom of the leotard off and used the mini skirt piece that comes with the pattern.  I modified it a bit to be a full circle skirt, just placing both edges on the fold of the fabric.  You could easily do this same thing to any top pattern and calculate your own circle skirt for the peplum.  We went through a handful of our favorite tee patterns as options before I settled on the leotard pattern since I was sewing while she was at school and couldn’t accurately gauge how much to take the sides in on a standard looser fitting tee without her trying it on.

Other modifications you can make to standard patterns include using your favorite underwear patterns for bottoms.  You can simply line them in swim lining or swim fabric!  Keep that undies pattern handy and add it to your well-loved shorts pattern, catching the top of both in the elastic casing or band, for a cute pair of swim shorts.

Close fitting tops make excellent swimwear.  I love to slim down raglans as rash guards but you could also use a well fitting tank pattern as a swim top too!   I like to line the front bodice piece for girls and add a simple elastic shelf bra for myself.  You can use elastic for the neckline and arms too.  Since it is a tight fitting garment make your elastic just barely shorter than the opening.  I serge the elastic to the wrong side and turn it under once then topstitch with a double needle or zigzag stitch.

payt6

For this cute suit, I used the Leotard Etoile with the included Demi Skirt used as a shoulder ruffle.  I serged the neck elastic to the lining, main suit and ruffle.  I then flipped the elastic under and topstitched it down underneath the ruffle keeping the clean line at the neck.

payt4

It was a breezy day and I loved catching the ruffle blowing in the wind!

morgan2

This last cutie is wearing a modified Cosi Swimsuit too!  I just love that little belly but as we discovered last year high waisted suits just don’t want to stay put.

morgan1

My sister sewed this one up too and I love this fabric she chose!

I sure wish these cute cousins could see each other all the time!  They sure do love each other and we can’t wait to spend as much time as possible together this summer!

Well, folks, I quite possibly will never sew another swimsuit again.  Just kidding!  I’m ready to move on to something new but I’m pretty sure it won’t be long before I’m itching to ‘dive in’ to swimsuits again.  They really are so rewarding and such quick sews (minus those epic boardshorts!).

I really hope that you’re ready to Suit Up yourself and I can’t wait to see what you guys make this summer.  It’s really been such a pleasure hosting this tour and hearing from all of you.  Now get off the computer and get sewing!

Suit Up For Summer Day Four

group3

We’ve made it to day 4- woot woot!  Have you learned anything so far?  Picked up a pattern or two?

Today I’m talking about the best part of swimsuit sewing- FABRIC!!  If you’re anything like me, you can never have enough fabric.

We have multiple fabric sponsors on the tour and I’m excited to get you guys shopping.  The Fabric Fairy has a HUGE selection of both spandex and board short fabric as well as everything you need to complete your suit- elastic, bra cups, linings, etc.

Peek-a-Boo Fabric Shop offers great custom printed fabrics and coordinates.  You can pick up your PAB pattern and sew it up in PAB fabric- oh cool is that?!

Simply By Ti has some great choices for swim cover-ups- think cozy french terry and bright crochet fabrics.

Boo! Designs is based in Australia and has an unbelievable selection!  Like I want to order a dozen prints right now!

Sash Fabrics is another custom fabric shop full of unique and fun designs!

group1

My family is all decked out in another of our sponsors latest designs- Raspberry Creek Fabrics!  I love that these fabrics coordinate so well together without us being too matchy-matchy.  When looking through the new line it was so easy to pair up each print to my kids personalities!

tanner6

The Sunset Palms were meant to be this kid’s.  He lives in subtle Hawaiian prints and this was just too perfect for him!  You can read more details about his suit in yesterday’s post.

soph2

I’ve been dying to share this suit!! This sweet, sophisticated girl is rocking the Tropical Leaves swim print in a Lil Luxe Leotard Etoile.  I think this is the perfect pattern/fabric pairing!

soph4

The simple silhouette really lets this print shine!

soph1

I need one of these suits for myself ASAP!

charlie3

My little man NEEDED these sharks the minute he saw them.  I love the colors in this print and how easily they coordinate to so many others!  You can find his suit in yesterday’s post too!

payton1

This sassy girl loves the bright colors of the Sea Floor print.  Paired with the Nautical Stripe it’s too cute for words!

payton4

She’s wearing a Marilyn Vintage Suit from Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop.  This suit offers plenty of coverage and so many cute options.  This simple view was fun to showcase these prints.

payton3

She certainly loves it!

mom8

I got another suit too!  This time I used the Nautical Stripe for myself.  I used the Edgy Top from George and Ginger.  It’s not designed as a swim top but with a few modifications it worked great!

mom9

I lined the front and added cups and an elastic shelf bra.  I cut my pattern a size smaller and finished the neckline and arm with elastic cut barely smaller than the openings.  I like to serge my elastic on in the round to the wrong side of my fabric then flip it under and topstitch with a twin needle.  Super easy!

mom10

I used the bottoms from the First Crush Suit from Rad Patterns.  The suit offers so many options and great coverage!

I love these stripes and the chance they gave me to play with the directions.  This swim knit is some of the nicest I’ve ever sewn with.  It’s nice and thick and has great 4-way stretch making it super easy for me to use it on the diagonal.  The matte finish gives it a very high-end feel.

mom6

I also used coordinating Navy Board Short Fabric to make me a pair of Swim and Surf Shorts from Gracious Threads.  I love the fit of these and after making my little guys these were such a quick sew.  I love the extra coverage for chasing kiddos around!

Phew!  So…many…swimsuits!  Are you sick of me yet?!! Just one more day…

I’ve got to give a huge thank you to our good friends for letting us borrow their gorgeous backyard for these pics!  It was absolutely perfect!

Make sure to enter the giveaways for your chance to win some of these amazing fabrics from our sponsors with a ton of patterns too!

One Thimble 15 Blog Tour

sneak2

One Thimble Issue 15 is here!  If you’ve been following me for awhile you know I just love when a new issue comes out.  I’m always so excited to see what each issue has in store- so many different designers and contributors that always keep things fresh and fun.

soph3

I was happy to hop on the tour and sew up two patterns from this latest issue.

soph8

I did Thread Faction #116, a comfy unisex v-neck cardigan.  It comes in sizes 2-10 and is a super quick sew.  I let her pick between buttons, snaps, or a bow closure and she went with the ribbon.  I love the little feminine detail it adds and how it made the project even faster!

soph7

I also sewed up the Miriam Skirt from OUSM.  It comes in sizes 12m-8 years and has a high waist with big pleats.  I did a size 7 with 8 length but totally should have added a few more inches- doh!  She’s off the size chart height-wise so it’s much shorter than intended.  I’m calling it ‘vintage-length’ 😉  The skirt came together so quickly too.  I added the exposed zipper- I couldn’t help but use this cute polka dot one I’ve had in my stash forever.

soph1

She had a Paris-themed birthday party to go to after this shoot and won ‘Best Parisian Outfit’ at the party.  She loved how chic she felt.  She had requested a stripe shirt for the party and this was perfect paired with the floral skirt and knee highs.

soph4

Totally French school-girl esque, right?!

soph6

This issue is chock full of goodness- 10 pdf patterns and 29 sewing articles.  Doesn’t that sound like the perfect afternoon- sitting in the backyard with a lemonade and the latest issue?!

Raspberry Creek’s Newest Club Line

biggroup1 Raspberry Creek Fabrics newest CLUB line is here and now available for retail purchase.  It was so fun to sew up these gorgeous fabrics with a few of my favorite sewing buddies.  Of course we had to get our cuties together to show you all the goodness!

L-R: Kainara Stitches, Ammon Lane and Little Fish.

group2

My girls loved posing with cute Inara from Kainara Stitches.  Her mom Anna always picks the cutest fabric combos and I can’t get enough of this lil redhead.  These pretty watercolor florals are so soft and sweet.  Inara’s is perfectly paired with the mint dots.

Isn’t that stripe so pretty?!  I love mint and coral together!

The soft colors on this peach watercolor are so springy!  It’s even more gorgeous in person!

group4

How cute are these kiddos of Enjoyful Makes?!  Halle is adorable in her mustard/navy plaid.  The airplanes are every boys favorite!

skirt4

We also love the coral/mint plaid.  It pairs so well with the coral dots!

This watercolor stripe is a fan favorite.  You can’t go wrong with a grey stripe and bold flowers!  Seriously pretty!

I love all the different floral/stripe prints and how unique they all are.  This bold navy version is too cute on my girly.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Make sure you head over to Raspberry Creek and check out the whole CLUB line.  Diana is busily printing away and adding prints hot off the printer.  Yes, that’s right!  I forgot to tell you all the best part!  RCF is now printing in house featuring fabrics milled right here in the US.  This CLUB line is printed on the softest, best quality cotton/lycra and french terry.

Stay tuned for more CLUB fabrics coming soon!

Little Kiwi’s Closet Straight Skirt Tour

skirt8

Little Kiwi’s Closet is a new to me pattern company but apparently I’m late to the party, they are celebrating 5000 members in their Facebook group– hooray!

As a thank you to members, they are offering a code for this darling FREE Straight Skirt! I love to try out new designers and their free patterns are the perfect start.  This pattern from LKC did not disappoint.

skirt4

I paired the skirt with the Flutterby Peasant Dress and Top.  I’ve been missing a basic peasant top pattern in my collection and this one is fantastic.  There are multiple sleeve, elastic, and ruffle options and it comes in sizes newborn to 12.  Peasant tops are such a great starting point for so many looks so I know I’ll turn to this pattern again and again.

skirt3

She’s been wanting an off the shoulder top and it was a super easy hack to get this look.  Ready for it… just use longer elastic in the casing- DONE!  It’s such a trendy look and I love that I didn’t have to get a special pattern for it.

skirt5

This skirt is really so darn cute!  I used more Raspberry Creek CLUB fabrics for this whole look.  These fabrics should be available again starting this week.  I love that you can play around with fabric combos with this pattern.  Those pockets just beg for a contrasting fabric!

skirt1

There are a variety of options with this skirt too.  You can do angled or curved pockets, yoga or elastic waistband, above or below knee and banded or hemmed bottom.  It comes in sizes 12 months- 14 years.  I did a straight size 7.  She measures a 7 waist and 10 height, this is the below knee option hitting her right at her knees.

I love that right after we took these pictures she was climbing poles and running around.  That’s a sign of a comfortable outfit!  Definitely kid approved!  And yes, she habitually wears shortie leggings under all her dresses and skirts so she can feel free to play to her hearts content in style!

skirt7

This sweet, girly outfit has won Little Kiwi’s Closet another fan!  Make sure you join the Facebook group to get your copy of the Straight Skirt today!

Growing Up Handmade

teaser

When this blog tour was thrown out there I immediately wanted to join.  In the back of my head I have this huge fear that one day my kids won’t want me to sew for them.  My big boys request things here or there but really don’t wear them a lot.  They didn’t grow up with me sewing much for them though.  My girls on the other hand have been in handmade since they were toddlers.  I think I’d be heartbroken if one day they said to me, “Mom, please can’t we just go to the mall for all my clothes now?!”  For now, I love that they come to me with items they want me to sew or pull fabric they want made up.  It just makes my creative heart happy!

PicMonkey Collage

This little miss is the reason I dusted off my sewing machine after years of neglect.  It was so fun to sew for a tiny girl.  It didn’t take very much fabric or time and she would happily wear it-mistakes and all.   I started with easy paper patterns or simple upcycling projects.  I followed all the good sewing blogs and loved when the bloggers started doing patterns too!  My little Sophie loved to help pick fabric and was always such a willing model.  It was so much fun looking through pictures of her ‘growing up handmade’.

sophie2

For this tour I wanted to showcase some of my favorite tween friendly makes.  Sophie recently requested more joggers and leggings because she now ‘hates’ jeans.  I love it when she wants easy to sew pieces!

sophie9

I made five pieces that can be mixed and matched a bit.  We threw in her denim jacket and she now has three or four cute new outfits.

This first piece is by one of my favorite designers- Adrianna from Hey June.  I love when designers kids are my kids ages because then they usually continue to design for them as they grow.  The Hey Junior Line is the perfect basic patterns.  The City Park Tee is a staple in our house so of course I needed to add it to the mix.  This is done a size up to wear with leggings in gorgeous cotton/lycra from Raspberry Creek Fabric.

sophie15

Shwin Designs has always been another favorite in our house.  I love the hip, original designs!  The Studio Top and Dress can be made in woven or knit which makes it so versatile and perfect for my girls.  They have almost outgrown Shwin’s regular patterns but lucky me- Shauna has launched a new B side line for tweens and teens!  I sewed up the largest size in this one in a beautiful blush cotton/lycra from Raspberry Creek.  This top was her favorite piece and she squealed when she saw it!  There will be many more of these in her closet for sure!

sophie10

For bottoms I wanted a pair of leggings with a twist.  The Peony Leggings from Sew Like My Mom were just what I was after.  They have a fun side stripe that can be plain or ruched.  These were going to be ruched but my sewing machine and double brushed poly were not being friends.  Luckily my serger is pals with the fabric and she still got her leggings.

Sew Like My Mom also has a tween line that we adore. The Boxwood Joggers and Fern Cardigan get worn so much here!  I need to grab the Apricot Dolman when I get a chance too!

sophie4

To fulfill her jogger dreams I used the True Bias Mini Hudson Pant pattern.  She’s had a dozen or so of these and I know they fit her well.  This is a size 8 with 10 length- size 10 is the largest size so I’ll be sad to see her grow out of this pattern.  I’m not too worried though because my trusty Brassie Joggers start at an XXS/24″ waist.  This fabric is a pretty french terry that I picked up from So Sew English I believe.  So Sew English has a TON of pretty floral french terry.

sophie3

Lastly I did a Pattern for Pirates Butterfly Cardigan.  P4P is a great place for tween patterns.  Their kids patterns usually go to a 14 and their adult patterns start at XXS, covering every size you need!  They carry lots of basics and some really trendy designs too.  I love her sister’s company Made For Mermaids for the same reasons.  For this cardi I used a super soft french terry from Stylish Fabric,  Stylish Fabrics has so many solid french terry colors to choose from- this seafoam is heavenly!

We mixed and matched these pieces for lots of stylish, comfortable looks that will get worn over and over again!  Perfect for school and playing soccer in the backyard after school, too.

sophie13

I tried my hardest to pick patterns that I stand by and truly love- leaving affiliate links out of this post so you know I really support and love these patterns.  A few other designers that I feel are especially tween friendly are Love NotionsSew Straight and GatherPetite Stitchery, Chalk and Notch and Striped Swallow.  What are some of your favorites?  Any I should check out?  I plan on sewing for this girl forever so I’ll take all the suggestions I can get!

Sew Straight and Gather’s Avenue Collection

avenue8

The newest collection of patterns is now available from Sew Straight and Gather! The Avenue Collection features a dress/top, flare pants, and a duster cardigan.

avenue3

I was lucky enough to test the Duster and the Dress patterns and I couldn’t love them more!

avenue11

Terri’s patterns are always impeccably drafted and feature the best tutorials out there.  Her designs are always on trend but classic at the same time.  I’ve really cut back on testing patterns lately but couldn’t resist these.  I knew I’d have a great experience as Terri takes her time and listens to her testers.  She works so hard to put out the best patterns around.  I always feel so comfortable and confident in recommending a Sew Straight and Gather pattern.

avenue6

For my look, I used the calf length Duster with pockets and facing.  I love that there are multiple length options and you can choose to do a band, hem, or facing.  I used Soft Coral Ponte from Cali Fabrics and love how flowy it looks but how easy it was to sew up!

avenue5

I did the knee length dress version with split hem in the back.  This gorgeous fabric is part of Raspberry Creek Fabric’s newest CLUB fabrics line (it will be available for retail soon!).  I used the cotton/lycra version and it was just the right weight for this dress.

avenue4

My little girl just loves this dress!  She says she feels so grown up in it but I love that it’s not too mature looking on her too.

Make sure to grab the collection while it’s on sale- the whole collection is just $15 (CAD) or you can pick up the individual patterns for $5 for the next two days!  Any US peeps that’s a smokin’ deal! I can’t wait to see all the stylish girlies in these!

Fiesta Fun Fabric Tour

main1

Guys, I got an email from THE Dana.  The one that I started following when these girls were just babies.  The one that lit the fire in me to get my sewing machine out after years of neglect.  The same Dana that introduced me to pdf patterns and KID Shorts.  Is it weird that I already felt like we were buddies?  I don’t think I could have jumped on board this tour any faster.  Throw in gorgeous fabric celebrating one of my favorite places in the world and I was all over this one!

fiestafabric

I got my girls on board and let them pick what fabrics they wanted and boy was that a tough decisions.  The colors are so vibrant and the patterns are unique and so happy.

fiesta12

My oldest settled on the Zocalo Lemon and Mexican Dress Morning prints.  I picked the later in canvas to use as a bottom-weight.  It was my first go with Art Gallery canvas and I will definitely be using it again.  It was the perfect weight for these shorts and I’d love a cute bag out of it too!

fiesta8

My sassy girl made up her mind in no time.  She saw the vibrant Desert Flor Summer and knew she just NEEDED a dress out of it.  I love, love how bright and fun this pattern is.

fiesta13

When picking patterns to really highlight this fabric I wanted something different and a little bit out of the safe silhouettes I usually gravitate to.  Shwin Designs newest collection came out just in time!  The Oh Darling Top and Dress is ready to party.  For my oldest’s outfit I went with the Pensacola Beach Petal Top from Seaside Notions paired with the Emilya’s Skinny Pants from Simple Life Pattern Co.

fiesta9

Tell me this fabric and pattern combo weren’t meant for each other.  This print actually called to me in the middle of the night and told me it needed to be a shoulder flounce dress.  And these yellow pom poms in my stash had been dreaming of the day when they would grace this little girls’ arms.  I couldn’t let them down…

fiesta10

I love the that this dress has the fun flounce but also covers her shoulders.  It makes it church appropriate which is THE place to wear a fun fiesta dress.

I altered the pattern just a bit.  I added an extra inch to the width of the ruffle making it even more dramatic.  I then added elastic at the waist to bring it in.  Simple modifications that really make this dress extra delightful.

fiesta2

This growing girl needed new shorts and the Emilya’s were perfect.  She likes bermuda length which is fortunate because that’s what her school dress code suggests too 😉  The pattern comes with a cargo pocket option and shorts cuff but we kept it simple with just the addition of piping in the side seam.

fiesta11

Now that top is so cool, right?  The scoop back is darling and the layered, curved skirt pieces really make it stand out.  You know big sister needed poms too, can’t let lil’ sis have all the fun.

fiesta7

That square neckline makes me happy!  So do those sweet, innocent eyes.

The girls were feeling so playful in these outfits.  They just crack me up!

I am so glad I got to join in on the Fiesta Fun.  This southern California girl-at-heart is always ready for a fiesta.  Now I’m craving a frozen limeade on a sunny beach- maybe it’s not the fiesta I’m wanting but a ‘siesta’ that this mama needs 😉

Thanks so much for letting me in on the party Dana!
