Sew Straight and Gather Andromeda Top and Dress

butterfly4

Terri at Sew Straight and Gather has done it yet again.  I swear she can do no wrong.  Her patterns are always so unique and so well done.  The Andromeda Top and Dress is no exception.  AND- she’s having an AMAZING Black Friday Sale right now.  All single patterns are just $5 CAD!  What a steal!!! I suggest heading over there right after reading how much I love this new pattern 😉

butterfly12

I tested the girls version but there is also a ladies- yessssss!  The girl’s comes in sizes 2-14 and the women’s in sizes XS-3XL.  They both feature banded top, tunic,  free flowing dress and gathered waist dress options.  Those sleeves make it so incredibly fun!

butterfly5

I made my first one out of pretty double brushed poly from Knitpop.  It worked perfect for this pattern.  I left the sleeves raw and did a simple neckband.  This pattern could possibly be the quickest thing I’ve ever sewn!  Just a few seams later and this beauty was done.

butterfly8

She’s worn it a few times since and always gets so many compliments.  It’s so darling and definitely has that wow! factor.

butterfly14

Little sis was intensely jealous and was dying for her own.  I’ve been crushing hard on stretch velvet lately and snatched up some gorgeous colors from Stylish Fabric.  I used this pretty gold and I’m thrilled with the quality and great customer service I received.  AND it was also a steal compared to what I’ve seen elsewhere. It was my first time sewing with it and I new this simple pattern was a great choice to begin with.

butterfly13

From cut to finish this was done in under a half hour (it helped my pattern was all ready from big sis- loving that they wear the same size!).

Can we talk about this goofy girl for a minute?  She did NOT want to model but the second she got this on she was smitten.  She turned on the super model moves like that!  She kills me!

butterfly11

I’d say she likes it!

Make sure you grab your Andromeda- you can get the girls, ladies (Terri’s sweater-knit cover version is killer!) or the bundle.  Don’t forget to pick up some of my other favs too- check out my versions here, here, here, here, and here.

I love the full skirt and feminine puff sleeves!

Pattern for Pirates Joggers

all2

It’s not very often I get to sew for my big boys so I jumped at the chance to test Pattern for Pirates newest joggers.  Best part- there is a pattern for the whole family!

all3

On any given day in our house at least 3 or 4 of us are sporting joggers of some kind.  My big boys live in their woven ready-to-wear versions and love to lounge around in comfy knit ones too.  My littlest will ALWAYS pick ‘soft pants’ and I can’t make them fast enough for him.  Now me, you know I’m a fan (here, here, and here).

tanner1

This guy is growing like a weed and we have the hardest time finding pants long enough for him.  These are perfect for him!  We didn’t need to add length this time but it will be an easy alteration in the future.

tanner3

He likes his joggers nice and skinny and was pretty happy with the fit of these- loose through the hip and thigh and tapered calf and ankle.

For his, we did slat pockets, elastic waist with drawstring, and cuffed bottoms.

alex2

This guy is still tiny!  He’s finally growing a bit but his waist/hips are staying slim.  The fit on him is a bit bigger since I went with his waist measurement and not his hips which would have took him down a size or two.

He likes the fit and has worn them any chance they’re clean.

alex3

His pants feature the patch pockets, elastic waistband and rolled hem.

alex1

A winning combo!

charlie2

Charlie is super easy to please.  He picked his fabrics and is one happy camper!  All of the fabric for our group shoot is from the lovely Raspberry Creek Fabrics.

His love of comfy pants is hard because he’s got a tiny waist and long legs.  RTW elastic waist pants are usually too big in the waist for him.  So unfortunately (wink, wink) mom has to sew him a drawerful of cute pants.

charlie5

These are a size 5 with a 4 yoga waistband.  The yoga waistband totally ups the comfort factor even more!

mama4I made two pairs for myself during testing and I can’t hardly stand to take this pair off.  It’s a super soft double brushed poly and they feel like heaven!

I struggle with fitting my calfs in other jogger patterns and I love that calf measurements are included in these.  I made a size small graded to a large at the calf and then back down to a small at the ankle.  The fit is just perfect!

Make sure to pick up your copies today! You can get the bundle or buy them separately- Baby Bear, Mama Bear, and Papa Bear.

One Thimble Issue 13 Blog Tour

sneak

The newest issue of One Thimble is here!  It’s packed full of unique and fun kids patterns and so much sewing inspiration.  I’m excited to join in the release day fun and share two of my makes from Issue 13.

pair3

I was immediately drawn to these two bottom patterns- the Peg Shorts by Tadah Patterns and the Orbis Skinny Harems from Sofilantjes.  I love that they both come with a ton of options!

charlie4The Orbis Skinny’s are a unisex pattern in sizes 12 months to 14 years.  They are loose in the hips then almost legging tight through the calf- such a hip silhouette!  You can make them in 3/4 or long length.

charlie3

The pocket is one big piece that is so unique and such a great place to use those fun scraps.

charlie1

The asymmetrical faux fly is such a show stopper!  My little guy wanted snaps instead of buttons and I love the finished pants.

charlie2

Those pockets and the amazing french terry have won this guy over.  He has worn them constantly since I made them!

payt1

I was loving the Peg Shorts pattern and was excited to make them work with our quickly dropping temperatures.  In a gorgeous red cordoroy layered over tights, these are just perfect!

shorts2

I love the buttons on the front and the classic style.

shorts1

Gold details make these a fab choice for the upcoming holidays.

payt4

They come in sizes 3-10 and have a ton of adorable features.  You can do back welt pockets and Kawaii ruffles or a skirt front as well.  The back elastic waistband makes these super comfy too!

pair4

We struggled to get photos in after school one day.  Anyone else struggling with Daylight Savings?  I love the sunshine in the morning but it seems like it gets dark so quickly these days!

This tour is full of amazing bloggers and so, so much inspiration.  Make sure you check it all out and pick up your issue here.

These fabrics coordinate so well and are perfect for fall!  Each print will be available on 9 oz. Cotton Lycra AND 4-way stretch French Terry.  Grey, black, and navy stripes will also be back- hurray!

pair5

It was so fun to get together with our friends, Diana the genius behind Raspberry Creek and Emily of Enjoyful Makes, to shoot this fun new line!

Cute Grace is wearing the Hey June Camden Raglan in the new Navy Magenta Floral and Navy Polka Dot with a Deep Magenta neckband.  I love the dots/floral combo.

I’m going to need my own version of this top.  The Magenta Floral on Heathered Grey is so pretty!  Paired with the deep magenta and Navy Cotton Lycra it’s the cutest Jolly Roger Raglan I ever did see.

My little guy also got a Jolly Roger.  His is a classic combo-Mustard yellow stripes, Light Grey, and navy.  I can’t wait to sew him up a few more in all the great stripes headed to the shop.

Halle’s darling Figgy’s Stellar Tunic is my favorite!  I love this Purple Lightweight Chambray  paired with the gorgeous grey floral.  It looks fab with a touch of navy and mustard.

The Navy and Grey Triangles are perfect for boys and girls of all ages.  My girly flipped over her Love Notions Miss Mary Mack made with the triangles and deep magenta cotton lycra.

Love Notions Maggie and Margot Peplums

peplumpair5-1

I’ve been testing for Love Notions for about a year now and I’m so excited to help Tami celebrate the release of her 50th pattern!!!  The Maggie and Margot Peplums are full of options and will be a great addition to your PDF line-up.

*This post contains affiliate links.

margot3-1

Confession- this test was full of firsts for me.  This was my first EVER peplum make, first one I even tried on really.  This is also my first time using Liverpool.  I’ve got to say that I will definitely be doing both again!

maggie3-1

Both the ladies and girls versions come with a basic bodice option or you can do princess seams like in this one.  I love being able to mix fabrics with the princess seams.  Still using my favorite stripes and florals- this time both come from Raspberry Creek Fabrics.  You can find the floral here and the stripes are coming soon here (available for pre-order).

margot7-1

The Ladies comes in sizes XS-XXXL and features short, elbow, 3/4, and long sleeves.  There are also three skirt options- swing, gathered, and pleated.  I did a size small, plain bodice, elbow sleeve,  with a swing skirt.

(Another confession- I hate looking at the camera!  It’s so hard to look natural and not look like I’m trying to sell you lingerie!  Hence, the sunglasses in most of my pics AND why I sew for my kids way more than myself!)

maggie6

For Sophie I did a size 8, 3/4 sleeve, swing skirt top.  The girls version has all the same options and comes in sizes 2T-16 so I’ll be sewing these up for years to come!

peplumpair1-1

As always Tami’s patterns are trimless and feature layers.  They are thoroughly tested and flatter every tester I’ve seen.  The tutorials are always full of helpful tips and tricks and the Love Notions Pattern Support Facebook Group is a great resource if you ever get stuck.

Love Notions is celebrating big time in the Facebook group and it’s given me a chance to look back on my favorite Love Notions patterns.

I have ALOT! From the top- I wear my Canyon Cardigan almost daily and Charlie wears his Moto Maxx pants every time they’re clean.  The Tidal Top wins for cutest quick sew and the Tabitha Top is my perfect dressy casual top.  The Tessa Sheath Dress is the classic dress up or down dress.  My Charlie has requested more Vanguard Pants because he loves all the pockets!  In my search for the perfect dolman top I keep reaching for the La Bella Top for me and my girls- it’s the perfect slim fit that flatters everyone!  The options with the Li’l Laundry Day Tee, Tunic, and Dress make it a pattern I reach for ALL THE TIME!  I love patterns that almost all my kids can wear and the Samson Sweater is just that.  There are still so many options with the Sybil Illusion Skirt that I need to sew up but this pleated version is one of my favorite makes ever.  And finally the pattern that started my Love Notions journey, the Boyfriend Cardigan was my first Love Notions pattern test and I have a couple more planned for this fall.  I love that Tami designs for the whole family.  Looking back through all my makes was so fun and reminded me I want to make so many of them again!

Three Things I Learned from Project Run and Play

pokemon21

It’s been a week since the winner of Project Run and Play was announced and two weeks since my departure.  It’s so nice to be on this end of the adventure and to be able to reflect on the crazy month that we all had.  It was such a blast and I thought I’d share a few things that I learned.

1- I have the most AMAZING family and friends.  That’s the biggest thing I will take from the competition.  It was so fun to have my close family rally behind me.  From the fabric store runs with my ‘creative consultant’ sister-in-law to the pattern discussions over the phone with my sister, I couldn’t have done it without them.  I loved sharing preview pics with my photography loving dad and having my parents spread the word to everyone they knew.  Let’s not forget about my brilliant little models!  I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED our photo sessions.  We had such a blast each time and they really blew me away with how good they were.  They were the cutest things each week when I told them the results.  I’m hoping it’s something they remember for a long time- that one time when mom was in that crazy sewing competition 😉

My heart was full each time I shared a look and friends from near and far would comment with support.  Facebook is incredible that way.  Friends from my childhood to brand new sewing buddies, each comment or like really made my day.  I appreciated my local friends always asking how it was going and sharing their love- I know most of them really could care less about this little sewing world I’m in but it sure meant a lot!

Finally, I am so grateful to the new friends I made during the competition.  The ladies sewing furiously along with me each week are the best of the best in every way.  It was so nice to have people who knew exactly what I was going through and to be cheering me on too.  I honestly wanted everyone to win and the final results couldn’t have been more perfect.

pair6

2- I can sew WAY better than I ever thought.  Guys, I’m lazy.  There, I said it.  Sewing is my way to relax so for the most part I sew easy, quick projects.  The kind that don’t take too much brain power.  The kind that you can follow step by step and end up with a great looking garment.  I rarely veered from the pattern and would much rather buy a whole new pattern than hack a pattern I already own for the same look.  Whelp, that was then sistahs!  This competition taught me to push myself and the joy that comes from spending a bit more time and effort on a project.  All those pattern tests have sunk in and I remembered skills I had learned with each one.  Zippers, understitching, pinking curved seams, burrito bodices, and buttonholes galore!  I CAN do it!  It was a great feeling to have it all come back to me.

I really learned to trust my tastes and to go with my gut.  I agonized over each weeks designs and often would change my plan when I found the perfect zipper (week one’s Pikachu look was originally going to be a crop top/pant set) or couldn’t find the fabric I hoped for (I envisioned week two’s floral dress as a gorgeous fall plaid maxi but couldn’t find a print in the right colors).  But… it all worked out.  I stayed true to myself and my style.  I also realized how well I know my kids.  I worked with them on all the designs and we would always be on the same page.  It was such a joy to see their excitement at the finished pieces.  So, so worth it my friends!

pair6-1

3- Well, this one’s  a work in progress but I’ve learned I need to slow down.  This lil ‘ol blog started as a way for me to share my pattern tests and love of fabric.  It’s grown pretty fast and new opportunities are always coming my way.  It’s so easy to get excited about the newest pattern release or the next blog tour but sometimes it’s just too much.  I’m a worrier and I’m constantly thinking about my next project.  When I’ve got a dozen projects on the calendar my mind goes crazy!  I can’t sleep because I’m thinking about how great this fabric would look as that pattern or which kid gets the next pattern test.  So, I need to say no.  I want to sew what I want sometimes.  I have a pair of trousers for myself that I’ve been dying to make since the pattern released last winter but not sure when I can pencil that one in to the calendar 😉  I’ll still be sewing everyday but I’ll hopefully be spending a little more time on our new sofa too.  The house just might get a little cleaner too (a girl can dream can’t she ;)!

Thank you so much for cheering me on and for sharing this adventure with me.  It truly was a blast and one I will never forget!

Eleri from The Sew and Tell Project created a link-up for us all to share our thoughts on the competition.  You can check them out here:

Heidi and Finn Veritas Cape

poncho1

I’ve been loving the poncho trend and was just about to draft my own pattern when the tester call went out for the new Heidi and Finn Veritas Cape.  It was WAY better than I could have come up with and the animal hood options are too cute for words!

poncho2

It’s so cozy and so, so stinkin’ darling!  In sizes 12 months- 14 years, there’s a hood and a nice chunky cowl option too.

poncho4

I sewed up the bunny hood option for my little one.  Man, she kills me even when she’s pouting!

poncho6

I used a super soft cream fleece and the pink is a sweater knit.  This pattern works beautifully for all those thick, yummy knits you’ve been hoarding!

poncho3

I love the subtle hi-low hem and the facing is so fun to add a pop of color.

poncho5

This cutie loves her new poncho!  All my kids are super jealous of it and have asked for their own.  I’ve got to say that I’m with them…I need one for me too!

City Park Hack x2

cityhack10

You know by now that I have a severe love affair with Hey June patterns.  They are the basics that make up so much of mine and my kids wardrobes.  When I was playing around with patterns for Project Run and Play I couldn’t help but turn to these patterns as my basic building blocks.  Today I’m sharing two easy hacks that I did using the City Park Tee.

cityhack9

Loose peplums and swingy knit dresses are all over my Pinterest feed.  I knew this pattern would be perfect to recreate these looks.

cityhack1

For the cute swingy dress I used this tutorial Adrianna did.  I cut my front piece to create a v in the stripes and did it as wide and swingy as the fabric cut would allow.  I used my leftovers from this dress (my own Union swing dress hack).  It has just the perfect amount of drape and bounce.  She just couldn’t stop spinning in it!

cityhack3

I’m absolutely loving this length on her too.  Hopefully she can wear it well into next summer.

cityhack2

One can never have enough black and white stripes in their wardrobe!

cityhack7

For the peplum hack I cut the bodice pieces at the lengthen/shorten line. I added a gathered skirt the width of the fabric and Bam!  A cute swingy top in no time!

cityhack6

I think I’ll be sewing elbow length sleeves until someone gives me an intervention.  They just are the perfect length to wear on their own or to layer with a cardigan.

cityhack4

Fall means more plaid too!  Be forwarned that this blog will soon be overrun with all things plaid 😉

cityhack8

I love these quick, simple takes on an already fabulous pattern!  I’m sure they’ll get many more!
