Back to School Tour 2019

I love a good blog tour filled with friends, awesome giveaways, and any excuse to get behind my sewing machines. The Back to School Blog Tour hosted by Karly of Paisley Roots was the perfect reason to drop everything and sew up a few back to school pieces.

This little miss starts middle school this year, sob sob. Her actual first day is TODAY and while you are reading this I just might be having a mini-meltdown. Middle School! How did that happen?! She’s so ready and I know she’ll rock it but when did my little girl get to be such an amazing young woman?!

She’s getting to be very picky and very particular about what she wears. She definitely follows teenage trends. She’s such a shy girl that she likes to fit right in and not be too flashy. For her back to school wardrobe, she shopped at her favorite stores, Tilly’s and H&M, and then we threw in three handmade pieces that would really compliment and work well with her store-bought items. What resulted is a cute mix and match mini capsule wardrobe that she loves!

I used three patterns from my favorite pattern designers that cater to tween and teen sizing. Modkid Boutique has an ever expanding catalog of tween patterns that are so on-trend. Hey June Handmades Hey Junior line is a collection of basic pieces that can be hacked into a million different looks. It’s a great starting point for classic patterns you can use again and again. I also turn to Love Notions Patterns because their patterns go from size 2t-16 which means I can use them for my girls and my nieces. I love a great size range!

The first handmade piece is a hacked Brooklyn from Modkid in a super fun Retro Stripe from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. For this look, I took the dress piece and just shortened it to top length. She loves mock necks and this pattern fits her well. It’s slim fitting and has multiple sleeve options. I used the long sleeve pattern piece and shortened it to hit mid bicep.

Her leggings are our go-to Love Notions Leggins’. They are a nice slim cut and always fit her so well. I used a mid-weight cotton lycra from CaliFabrics. I absolutely love the weight of this fabric for leggings. I’ve been on the quest for great leggings fabrics since this girl would live in them and I will be ordering more colors of this for sure!

Her last handmade item is a Morrison Tee from Hey June Handmade in a yummy modal stripe from CaliFabrics. This fabric is my absolute favorite for tees and if it looks familiar it could be because I’ve made a handful of other tops out of it in multiple colorways for her and I. It’s so soft and that drape is amazing!

The Morrison Tee is another pattern that I turn to over and over again. That back curved hem and the oversized fit just make me happy! I did an extra-wide cuff and folded it up and tacked it in multiple places. I just love a cuffed sleeve.

Back to School with Project Run and Play

Summer is coming to an end and my kiddos are headed back to school next week. Making and buying new school clothes and supplies is one way we make it a little less painful. It’s hard to be sad when you’ve got a cute outfit on, lol! I sewed up the Odeline Blouse and Dress from Iris May Patterns. I loved all the options that come with the pattern and it was so fun brainstorming different ideas. A cute gathered sleeve dress in plaid flannel? I simple solid version with ALL the ruffles? A striped linen dress for the last bit of summer weather? One look at all the listing pictures really had my mind reeling. So.Many.Options!

We settled on a short sleeve blouse in this fantastic pineapple print crepe that I picked up in the LA Fabric District. We’ve got a couple more months of nice weather and I wanted something she could wear the first few days of school. She’s loving the pineapple trend and this colorway feels like something that will work well into fall. Short sleeves are so great for layering once the weather gets cooler too.

This pattern features both blouse and dress lengths. There are short, 3/4, and long sleeve options and you can pick a plain or puff sleeve. You can also choose to add a ruffle to the neckline, bodice, and chest. Mixing and matching all the options gives you so many different looks. I chose the neckline ruffle, plain short sleeve and blouse length.

This was one of my first patterns that does not include a seam allowance. I’ve got to admit- I was terrified I’d screw it up! I watched a couple of YouTube videos to refresh my memory and just went for it. I used the two pencils stuck together method and it worked out great- so quick and easy! I’m glad I won’t have to be so intimidated in the future.

I love how this turned out and I’m so glad I still have enough of this fabric left so we can be twinning. It’s such a versatile piece and will work so well for those hot first school days.

Summer Sewing 2019

This summer has just flown by. I’ve barely been at my machines and if I’m being honest, it’s been fantastic! Lots of traveling, family time and incredible experiences. With summer winding down I’ll certainly miss the sunshine and lazy days but I’m anxious to get my own free time back. I’ve got a list a mile long just waiting to be sewn up!

Raspberry Creek Fabrics new Fall Line hit the shop today and it was the perfect excuse to spend the day sewing with my sister while she’s in town. These three cute cousins are loving their coordinating looks!

My sister sewed up a Greenpoint Cardigan for her dino loving daughter. Her kids wear a uniform to school and this cardigan will be a great layering piece to and from school each day. This dino print is so fun and is a great neutral piece.

Her little man got a new Constance Sweater in the Geo Shark print. A simple piece that is so cute and comfy! She paired it with ribbing from Hobby Lobby and I can’t wait to copy this look for myself.

For Charlie, I used the Sloane Sweater from Love Notions paired with a Shark panel and the Allover Geometric print. I love how these prints pair so well with any solid. I love this kid in teal so that’s what he got, lol. It won’t be long before he’s picking every element of what I sew for him so I’ll take what I can get now 😉

The Sloane is drafted for girls but looks fantastic on him. That shoulder and back detail is my favorite!

This girl lives in leggings all winter so we’ll gradually start building up her stash. This horse print is so fun paired with a denim shirt and I think it will look so cute with so many of her cardigans and sweaters come cooler weather too! I turned to my trusty FREE Love Notions Leggin’s again. They’re such a great fit for both my girls.

Sew Americana Blog Tour 2019

The Sew Americana Blog Tour hosted by Katy of Wild and Wanderful and Thread and Grain has become a tradition for us. For the past four years, my sister and I have joined in the fun, sewing for our kids, and doing cute cousin photos in their new handmades. We’ve done pretty dresses, fun play clothes, swimsuits, and this year we decided on pjs. We even through in our little boys for even more cuteness (and chaos!).

After a marathon day of sewing, our photoshoot at dusk with six kiddos was an adventure! My sister and her kids have lived all over the country (they’re currently in Colorado) and we cherished the few days we had with them. They sure love each other and are too cute when they get together.

For these looks, we used a ton of stash fabrics, mostly from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. We also had fun using our favorite everyday patterns to create comfy loungewear that doubles as play clothes for those long summer days that tend to blend together!

These two are wearing Hey June Racerback dresses hacked to be top length paired with Patterns for Pirates Walk the Plank pajamas shorts.

The boys are sporting Titchy Threads Rowan tees and Oliver + S Sunny Day shorts. My Charlie is indeed wearing his backward, lol!

Little Edie is adorable in Sew Much Ado’s free nightgown pattern.

And finally, my oldest is sporting Love Notions Leggins and girls Classic Tee. She loves that she can wear these as separates during the day too!

Riley Blake Stripes

I’m not shy about my love of all things striped. I will pick striped fabric any day! Of course, I would jump at the chance to sew up some of Riley Blake Designs yummy stripes.

The toughest question was just which stripes to choose. With 1/8″, 1/4″, and 1/2″ widths to choose from in a wide array of colors, I was truly stumped. I love a classic black and white pairing and I knew my oldest would dig them as well. I got 1/2″ and 1/4″ so I could do a little playing around. My younger daughter is all about color and boy did I struggle to pick one. It was a tight race between mint, grey, aqua, and mustard before I finally settled on this baby pink 1/4″.

I used the Gwen Dress from Violette Fields Threads. I’ve been loving this style and went with this particular pattern because I loved the back elastic casings and nice big pockets.

That tie back is so adorable!

I mixed up the prints throughout the dress, playing with direction as I wanted. It made it so fun and stripe matching was a breeze.

She fit the size 8 waist and chest measurements but was off the children’s size chart for height. I added length to the skirt and button placket. Next time I will size up one and add a little length to the bodice as well. Combining sizes for width and length can be tricky! You’d think after all my practice I’d have it down to an art. As is, this dress is still adorable and will get her through this summer for sure before it’s passed on to little sis.

Speaking of little sis, she got a pair of paper bag waist shorts. They’re everywhere these days too and I’d been dying to hack some for ages. She got to be my guinea pig and the result is darling!

I used a shorts pattern I had handy (the Linden Romper shorts from Hey June). Since this was my first go at it I’ll tell you what I did, then tell you what I should have done. Live and learn baby!

First, I added a little width to them to make them more full using the slash and spread method. I also added length to the rise (about 1.5″). Now, this is what I’d do differently. I would actually shorten the rise and add a separate waistband. The way I did it the waist actually tapered a bit and didn’t want to fold down the full 2″. With a separate waistband you wouldn’t have that problem. No brainer for most of you I’m sure but I was flying by the seat of my pants as I sewed these up. Up until the moment I cut into them I had planned to do a button-front midi skirt but realized shorts would be way more practical. So I grabbed the nearest shorts pattern and went with it! Anyone else experience that rush of creativity and joy just letting go?!

For the paperbag style, I couldn’t believe how simple it was. I folded over the waistband an extra inch, creating a two-inch casing, leaving a small opening to insert your elastic. Then I sewed another row of stitching 1″ down from the top of the waistband. This creates the ruffle top. Insert your elastic into the bottom casing and finish your seam. I added a wide fabric sash and two small belt loops. The sash totally completes the look!

I’d say it was a great call! She loves them almost as much as I do and now I know just how to make my own pair!

Flying Fox Dungarees from Puzzle Patterns

The Project Run and Play shop just got a whole slew of new patterns! There’s a little something for everyone from rough and tumble jeans to pretty dresses. I’m joining in the fun today and sharing the Flying Fox Overalls from Puzzle Patterns.

The Flying Fox Overalls are a unisex pattern that starts at 12-18 months and goes all the way to size 10. It’s a classic staple that features both short length or full pant length. There is a back elastic casing that gives these a cute, slim comfortable silhouette.

My daughter is an overall collector, lol, and was thrilled when I showed her the pattern. She fit right in the size 9 width-wise but was 6 inches taller than the size chart goes. Luckily she really wanted capri length so the adjustments I made were very minimal. I added a little length to the straps and the hem and we were golden. I added a little faux drawstring for detail.

I used a pretty Robert Kaufman Essex striped linen from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. It’s lightweight but has enough structure to hold the shape of the overalls. I love playing with stripes and it was fun mixing directions on the pattern pieces.

I love that this black and ivory stripe will work so well with a lot of her tees and tanks. We debated between blush, mustard, or red tops for this shoot with the soft sweet blush winning. I think these look fantastic with tanks or long sleeves too, making them a year-round piece. How cute will they be with boots in the fall?!

Riley Blake Edie Jane

Have you guys missed seeing these cuties as much as I have?! My sister and her family are now living in Colorado and all I wanted for my birthday this year was a trip to visit them in their new home. I couldn’t help but squeeze in a little photoshoot with my nieces while I was there.

For these dresses, I used Edie Jane Main Teal and Edie Jane Navy Dot. There were so many prints to choose from and I simply love all the colorways. Teal, blush, navy, and gray are the main colors in the collection and they look so sweet together. There are large and small scale florals, script, and triangle prints and more.

It was so fun to pick prints that would suit their styles and personalities. While little sister is into all things girly, big sister loves dinos, dragons, and adventures. This subtle print is classic and just right for her.

I sewed up the Spencer Dress from Violette Fields Threads. I wanted a dress that could easily be layered and could take her into summer too. The simple silhouette is so cute and the buttons up the back are such a darling detail.

I love a simple dress to really let a fabric shine!

This dress is the Polly Pinafore from Bebekins. I’m sad my own girls have outgrown the pinafore look and I was dying to sew one up for this girly. The shoulder ruffles are so cute!

These girls were too cute on this windy Colorado day. It was so fun to play dress up AND get to take their pictures too! Being an aunt is the BEST!

Love Notions Dolce Dress

The Dolce Dress is the girl’s version of the amazing Lyric Dress. It has many of the same features as the Lyric including multiple sleeve options and the cute button-front bodice.

The girl’s version has the option to omit the button-front skirt and the elastic waist casing in the back makes it easy to get on and off. The Dolce also has a cute back yoke with a gathered back bodice, a detail that I think is adorable! One of my favorite things about Love Notions patterns is the huge size range, 2T-16, making this one my girls can use for a few more years still.

For our version, I did the button-front bodice, plain skirt and puff sleeves. I sewed up a size 8 with a 10 length (her measurements put her in a 7 width but I wanted a little growing room). I also used 5 buttons instead of the recommended 3 buttons on the bodice because I liked the look of them so much.

The fabric for this dress came from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. They just got in a bunch of pretty wovens and I had such a hard time picking one. I love this girly in pink and peach tones and knew she’d be excited for a kind of grown-up fabric choice. It’s a lovely rayon challis with just enough weight to sew up easily but also lightweight enough to drape so nicely. I really adore rayon challis in the summer!

Project Run and Play:Project Farmer’s Market

Project Run and Play is an institution in the children’s sewing community. The talent that makes up the PRP alumni is staggering. When I heard that a group of past designers was putting together a capsule wardrobe collection, Project Farmer’s Market, I jumped at the chance to be a part of it! I was honored to be able to sew up a few pieces of the collection and to get together with a couple of past PRP contestants for an epic photo shoot was like a dream come true.

For our shoot, I joined Lisa of Mabey She Made It and Sabra of Sew A Straight Line. My kids had met theirs at past photo shoots or park playdates and it was so fun to see them instantly get comfortable with each other. You could tell this wasn’t their first rodeo as they turned on the charm and smiles and nailed whatever us crazy moms told them to do. Totally blogger kids and such cuties!

For my looks I sewed up 5 pieces from the collection (and one freebie!). I sewed the Banana Boat Tee, Soleil Skirt, Turnip Up Trousers, Up Beet Tee, and Jonagold Jumper. The collection is full of both girl and unisex patterns and a huge size range making them something you can use for years to come. I really love patterns that I can use for multiple views and more than one kid. These patterns checked all my boxes.

Charlie got a pair of Turnip Up short and an Up Beet Tee from Celina of Petit a Petite. This is such a great summer outfit.

The Up Beet Tee has such a unique construction. The sleeve piece extends to the back yoke for such a cool look. I love the stripe and solid pairing- it really highlights the shoulder detail. Of course I had to throw on a little vinyl. This little guy is looking so ‘fresh’ it was totally appropriate 😉 I used a font and image available in Cricut Design Space for a tee that was perfect for our produce themed shoot.

The Turnip Up Trousers are so full of amazing details. I love the bound seams and he loves the knit waistband. With multiple pockets these are perfect for those little treasure hunters out there.

I love this easy tee and shorts combo. It’s comfy but definetely not boring. With unconventional details these patterns are great additions to my pattern collection.

My Sophie is at the top of most kids sizing and I was thrilled to see she could squeeze into this look by Jess from Lil Luxe Collection. The Banana Boat Tee and Soleil Skirt were just perfect for this fashion forward tween.

The Banana Boat Tee is so darn cute! I want it in my size! Sleeve cuffs, button tabs, side drawstring rouching, and a wide boat neckline take this tee over the top. So many darling details!

In a drapey rayon spandex, it pairs perfectly with the Soleil Skirt but also looks so cute with jeans.

The Soleil Skirt has a faux front button placket, back elastic waist, pockets, three lengths and optional suspender straps. It’s one I can see turning to again and again.

The Jonagold Jumper was the one I was most excited to sew up. My girls have been begging for overalls and it’s just so hard to get them that fit them both in the length and width. Shortalls can be soooo short on their long legs and long overalls tend to be capris 😉 This pattern is so full of options they can have a closetful now!

I sewed up the squared bib, shorts version but there are also pant and skirt options. You can add patch pockets to the bib and front hips too.

This simple chambray version will get worn to death this summer! I sewed up the free Seed headscarf and it adds the perfect touch to this outfit.

Suit Up For Summer Day 5

Can you believe we made it to the last day of the Suit Up For Summer Blog Tour?! Not gonna lie, I’m going to sleep well tonight! I’ve so enjoyed sewing swimwear and the sensational seamstresses on the tour have continued to impress me day after day. My jaw hits the floor with each new suit I’ve seen. It’s been a week of incredible ingenuity and I’ve found so many prints and patterns to add to my sewing queue.

Today I’m sharing a trio of suits and their matching cover-ups. This fabric combo right here has been taunting me in my dreams ever since I laid eyes on them. I saved them to sew up very last as my incentive to get everything else done! All that blush pink makes my heart burst!

For the swimsuit I used the Blush Floral swim knit paired with Mauve Polka Dot Mesh.

This fabric combo is so sweet and precious. I used the Lainey Swimsuit from Made for Mermaids. I knew I wanted a little ruffle for the mesh and the Lainey includes a ruffle option. I used the double ruffle hack on the M4M blog to really highlight that pretty mesh.

I adore this pattern and I think she’s gotten one every year since it released. I think that’s a tradition I can get behind. I love the bum coverage and that one shoulder look is just so adorbs!

If you are new to sewing swimsuits I highly recommend the Made for Mermaids patterns for great step by step instructions (Boo! Designs is another pattern company that is fantastic for swimwear beginners). The construction of the suits is pretty ingenious to give you hidden seams whether you do a full or partial lining. For this suit I fully lined the bottoms and just lined the front of the top. This fabric is surprisingly thick and opaque for having so much white background. In general, Raspberry Creek Fabrics base is a little thicker than what you might be used to and I never worry about it being sheer.

I used another Made for Mermaids pattern to create this perfect cover-up. The Spencer Robe is a great unisex pattern that can be used for so many things. In this gorgeous french terry it makes the ideal thing to throw on before or after a swim. It’s not too thick but is still nice and cozy.

This girl has been wanting a real one-piece swimsuit forever! I always have to gear up for lots of size blending and a couple of muslins to get something that will fit her lean long torso. The Mairin Swimsuit from Sew A Little Seam was such a good pattern to work with and we’re loving this classic suit. Paired with some Swim and Surf Shorts from Gracious Threads it’s a look that we both are crazy about.

I think you can never go wrong with gingham and I’m thrilled that Raspberry Creek is offering it in red this year. This navy floral board short fabric was one of our most loved prints this collection. Together they make the most adorable pairing!

I love that she can wear this outfit from the pool to the picnic afterwards. Board shorts are my go-to swim cover-up and I’ll happily ~~brainwash~~ convert this little miss to them too 😉

This little man got one more suit too! The Palm Euros from Sew Like My Mom are just about the cutest thing on little boys. I used this stripe for a preppy look that we both can get behind. I sized up one size for him to give him a bit more wiggle room. These are jammers length shortened a couple of inches.

Lowland Kids released this cute Racerback Hoodie this week and I knew it’d be a great top to throw on with his suits. In a cozy heathered french terry, it will be just warm enough after swimming.

These suits were some of my favorites ever! I love the vibrant cute fabrics and I’m glad I turned to some tried and true patterns for them. As I was sewing swimwear all week I took a few notes on things I couldn’t live without.

You can find my swim fabric tips here but these are all my favorite tools to have handy. When it comes to cutting slinky swim knit pattern weights, a rotary cutter, and a cutting mat are your best friends. When trying to keep your seams lined up, you can never have enough clips. Glue sticks are also super helpful for bindings, hems, or even stripe matching seams. I use sharp pins when attaching elastic though so that I can guarantee the elastic won’t pull the clips off. Swimwear elastic is key! Most patterns will call for it and the stretch and width of the elastic are all vital. When sewing on my regular machine, I like to use Eloflex stretch thread in my bobbin. It gives your seams a little more stretch and stability than a regular thread will.

For hems, I swear by Heat n Bond Soft Stretch. It will hold your hem in place and makes it super easy to fold the slippery fabric up into place. When actually hemming a stretch twin needle has always worked well for me. I will use a zig zag stitch for elastic but love a good double stitch hem on a rashguard or tankini top.
