Vero Beach Set by Hey June Handmade

The newest Hey June Handmade pattern set is something straight out of my teenage dreams. The Vero Beach Set is a two piece set perfect for the pool, beach or lounging at home.

I know I’m not the only teenager in the 90’s that lived in their Baja hoodies and this new pattern is a fresh take on the old familiar comfortable top. Paired with a pair of elastic waist, relaxed-fit shorts, it’s a set I can’t wait to live in on our next beach vacation (who knows when that will be but I’ll keep crossing my fingers it will happen soon!).

Let’s talk pattern details. This set comes in sizes 0-24 and features all the details you love about Hey June patterns. A detailed tutorial will walk you through each step (I suggest reading through the whole tutorial first so you don’t assume you know better than Adrianna and please sew things in the order she suggests or you may end up with a date with your seam ripper, not that I know from experience or anything…). The top is a boxy fit, with long sleeves, a hood, and a perfect kangaroo pocket. The bottoms have a full elastic waist, bias bound tulip hem, back darts for shaping, front slash pockets and back pocket with optional drawstring waist.

I sewed up a size 6 in this set and I love the fit. I skipped the back pocket and drawstring on my shorts as I knew these will solely be cover-up shorts for me. Those back darts are magic for getting a great fit and make the back waistline less bulky. The tulip hem gives me all the retro vibes and I’m thrilled to have a pattern for myself like the ones my daughters love to much. Speaking of daughters, my oldest is in line for her own set and I’m hoping we can make the smallest size work for her tiny frame. I think these shorts in particular would be too cute on her. This length works well universally and I think she could easily wear them to school even with their strict dress code. For me personally they are just too short for everyday wear. I usually wear lightweight pants or knee length shorts in summer. I had to laugh at my bermuda short tan lines in these pics. It’s a bit obvious we haven’t been hanging out by the pool this summer and my legs are paying for it.

For these shorts I used this perfect chambray from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. I love that I can make a whole rainbow of shorts!

Back when I tested the Hey June Hatteras I hacked the pattern to create a baja hoodie for my oldest girl. I’ve been dreaming of my own version ever since. Adrianna is always fantastic at making my dreams come true and I literally gasped when I saw the tester call for this top. It has such a beachy feel and with each new tester version my list of fabrics to use grew. It looks great in a lightweight solid, a bold stripe, and wait until you see Abbey’s bold floral version. For my version I used a polka dot double gauze I got from Alyssa May Designs (it’s sold out but she has so many great wovens that would work lovely for this pattern).

My favorite is the little hidden Rifle Paper Co. bias that just makes me happy! I have to jump at any chance to squeeze a little Rifle Paper Co. in.

Well, I’m ready to hit the beach. Who’s with me?! Make sure to check out the Hey June Blog for all the tester looks and then pick up your own copy of the pattern.
