The Love Notions Constellation Hoodie is here!  The Constellation Hoodie is the women’s version of the popular Kids Navigator Pullover.  I’m anxious to sew up a Navigator for my kiddos and just had to squeeze one in for me first!

constellation12.1

The Constellation Hoodie and Pullover is a loose fitting layering piece that can be made with multiple options.  It features a half-zip front bodice with either a hood or collar.  Thumbhole cuffs, banded or curved hem, and a full bust pattern piece are all included in the pattern.  I love that Love Notions patterns include a big size range, coming in sizes XS-XXXL.

constellation2.1

I love the relaxed fit of this pattern.  It’s nice and long and works great over skinny jeans or leggings.  It’s just made for comfort and those cozy winter days!

I sewed up a straight size small with the hood and thumbhole cuffs.

constellation6.1

For my hoodie I used CLUB Charcoal Black and White dots from Raspberry Creek Fabrics and lined the hood with cozy Robert Kaufman Plaid Flannel.  This combo of dots and plaid floated around the internet like crazy last year and I totally needed to recreate my own version.  The red zipper was a fun pop of color that I debated about for far too long and ended up being one of my favorite touches.  This pattern looks amazing in all different types of fabric from lighter weight french terry and sweater knits to thick, stable fleece and sweatshirting.

This pattern is rated confident beginner and I think it’s a great project to push your sewing skills.  Sewing the zipper was a breeze with the videos included in the tutorial.  It sewed up easily and I love the new techniques I learned.

Monaluna Simple Life Tour

hoodie2

Gorgeous fabric gets me EVERY TIME!  When Gemia from Phat Quarters Fabric and  Kelly from Handmade Boy mentioned a tour featuring Monaluna’s newest fabric line, Simple Life, I jumped on board in no time!  Throw in a chance to sew for this kiddo and I was in heaven!

hoodie3

I sewed up a Submarine Pullover from Shwin Designs for my man.  I used this incredibly soft poplin (available in the Phat Quarters Shop) for the main.  This fabric is quite possibly the softest cotton on the planet.  I would love a whole wardrobe for myself made out of it.  It drapes beautifully but still has a bit of weight making it great for so many projects!

hoodie1

The hood is lined in the cutest bear fabric- Nature Walk, also available at Phat Quarters.  This color combo is so cute and stylish.  I really love that this line is so ideal for boys without being over-the-top.  It’s perfect for those of us eager to please our little guys without giving in to characters and crazy themed clothing.

hoodie5

I’m anxiously awaiting spring and warmer weather and this hoodie is the perfect transition piece!  It works great layered over long sleeves for now but I also think it’ll be the ideal swim cover-up come summer too.

hoodie9

The sleeves feature a button-tab detail that makes it easy (and stinkin’ cute!) to roll up the sleeves come warm weather.

hoodie7

I made one small change to the pattern.  I used the pocket piece on the fold and cut two of them (it’s lined in the blue fabric).  I centered the pocket on the front and sewed the top and sides.  The bottom is caught in the hem band.  An easy hack and one my little buddy appreciates.

hoodie4

There’s just something about a little boy in a hoodie!  The way it frames his cute face is just about all my mommy heart can handle 😉

Boys Can Wear Pink

teaser

I jump at any chance I get to sew for my boys.  I’ve enjoyed following the  Boys Can Wear Pink Tour from Handmade Boy the past two years so I’m really excited to be joining in this year!  Make sure you enter the giveaway at the end of the post too!  Lots of awesome goodies coming your way.

boys1

This little guy was focusing on colors in preschool and was supposed to dress in the appropriate color each day.  It was another perfect excuse to sew up some pink!

My boys are very picky and I don’t sew for them much because of it.  This guy had to pick out the fabric and every detail of the hoodie.  There’s a reason you don’t see him on the blog more even if he does look darn cute when it’s all said and done.  He definitely turned on the model charm for this quick shoot!

boys5

I used the Jolly Roger Raglan and Add-on pack for this cute hoodie.  I did the cross-over hood option.  The Jolly Roger is my go-to for this boy.  I love the fit and the add-on options make it so much fun.  I used my favorite french terry from Raspberry Creek Fabrics for the main and a remnant of athletic fabric from Hobby Lobby for the hood.  He was very specific and if it was going to be pink it better be neon!

boys7

My new Silhouette machine I got for Christmas has been getting a workout lately.  I love, love, love it!  It’s so fun being able to really personalize our clothes.  I love when my kids come up with an idea or saying and just like that we can slap it on a tee!  I’m an 80’s kid and this ‘Stay Rad’ just fit with this sweatshirt.  It was a simple design to make and really makes this top, like, totally wicked dude!

boys2

I’m sorry my kid is so much cooler than me.  I’m pretty darn lucky I get to hang out with this stud everyday.  He’s such a sweetheart and mama’s boy that I think my heart will break when I send him off to school everyday this fall.  It’s so much fun having a little buddy to hang out with!

Watcha Wearin January Kids Style

waterfall2

As I was contemplating my second post for the Watcha Wearing January tour I knew I wanted to do it for kids clothes.  My closet is probably only about half handmade but my girls are close to 90% (I’ve yet to make jeans for them since I can pick them up for ten bucks and pj’s are about half rtw since they are just too darn cute!).  You guys see plenty of cute styled pics like the one above but I wanted to give you guys a glimpse into our reality.

I’d like to share what actually gets worn in our day to day.  I never really know what will be a favorite and what will sit on the hanger.  I always try to involve my kids when I sew and let them pick out fabrics and patterns and sometimes we hit the jackpot.  For pattern tests I usually ask which girl likes the pattern the most.  They have such different personalities that I’m getting pretty good at sewing for their own styles.  My boys are all about the comfort and I know I can’t go wrong with comfy pants, raglans, and hoodies.

A glimpse into our laundry baskets this week will find:

butterfly14

This velvet Andromeda Top has been worn at least once a week since I made it.  She has a matching one for her doll that is too cute too!

cocoon6

The Butterfly Cardigan is a new addition and both girls wear it whenever possible.  It’s just such a cozy layering piece!

payton2

The Miss Mary Mack (affl. link) from Love Notions is another top that this one wears constantly.  I really need to make her a few more.  I just love the yoke detail and all the fun options it has.

b2s13

This outfit of a Jolly Roger Raglan and Boxwood Joggers is his absolute favorite.  It’s comfy, warm and in his favorite colors so of course it’s worn as soon as it’s clean.

For a real dose of reality I grabbed pics of my kids if they happened to be in mama made this week.  They were usually taken after school or right after they woke up so they are lookin’ good!

Our Sunday looks:

You can find pretty pics and details on these here, here, and here.

After church casual:

Boxwood Joggers and a poncho I knit way before I even had a daughter (this is one of those things that kills me that she loves!).

School looks:

We have a super old Skipper Top, Baby bear joggers, Jolly Roger Raglan with cowl, Blair Top, and Hatteras Hoodie with Mini Hudson Pants.

It was fun to reflect on sewing for my kids and what makes something actually get worn.  What are your go-to patterns for your kids?  Anything that surprised you that they’ve fallen in love with?

Elevation Hoodie by Terra’s Treasures

This post contains affiliate links.  I signed up to be an affiliate AFTER testing this amazing pattern. I loved it so much and think that you will too!

elevation19.5

I’ve had a hoodie like this on my Pinterest board and I was too excited when I saw Terra’s Treasure’s (affl. link) version pop up in my Facebook feed.  Of course I jumped at the chance to test this beauty!

elevation1

Testing this also meant a chance to take pics of Alex and I don’t know which I was more excited for.

elevation20

elevation3.3

This kid just kills me and I had so much fun shooting and editing these pics.

elevation18

But you guys are here for the sweatshirt right?!!  This pattern is fantastic!  The colorblocking is so, so cool!

elevation15

The construction is trickier than your basic hoodie but the result is worth the extra time.

elevation10

I’m a sucker for colorblocking and love that Terra has done all the work for you.  The v-pattern is so unique and goes together great.  It takes a little patience to get the sleeves lined up just right and mine aren’t perfect everywhere but once on it’s hard to notice.

elevation14

I used fabulous french terry from Raspberry Creek Fabrics.  He’s a fan and even picked the colors (that just happen to be his school colors).

elevation17

The pocket in this hoodie is just fantastic!  I’m still getting the hang of welt pockets and these were simple and the directions were great.  The pocket is one long piece inside which adds to the cool factor.

He was so excited about his sweatshirt that he wore it to school the very next day- high compliment from a middle schooler.

You can pick up your pattern here (affl. link) and check out all the other great versions sewn up during testing!  This pattern comes in sizes 6-12 months all the way up to 16!  How fantastic is that?!! And it’s on sale through today for only $7!

Gotta love this kid!

Sew Straight and Gather’s Metro Pullover

metrofamily2

Terri at Sew Straight and Gather has got another brilliant pattern for you.   I have an addiction to making sweatshirts and consider myself quite the hoodie connoisseur so when I say you need this pattern you better hop right on that!

metropair1

There are two patterns- one for kids and one for women/men.  A pattern for the whole family is always going to get a lot of use in my house.

metroladies5

Each pattern comes with a hooded version or a cowl neck.  I made a couple of each just because I couldn’t stop.  Seriously, I want to see you make just one…

Metroboys1metroboys2

This cutie got the first one off the sewing machine.  I just adore his little face peeking out of that hood.  I love the unique hood and the fit of this sweatshirt.

I used Raspberry Creek Fabrics french terry in solid charcoal and oatmeal. The combo is neutral and the charcoal stripe hood lining just ties is all together.

metrogirls1

Payton’s was next and sewed up in a flash.  She picked out this anti-pill fleece from Joann’s and it worked just lovely for this pattern.

She got the cross-over cowl version.  It’s nice and big which makes it so cozy and cute!

The girls and ladies version have this darling pleat detail in the back.  It gives it a little more flow and adds just that little something extra.

There is a curved hem or a banded bottom option.  Payton got the curved hem.  I loved her version so much I headed to the fabric store the next day so that I could make one in my size!

I wasn’t signed up to test Sophie’s size but just loved this pattern so much I knew she needed her own too!  She got a cowl with a banded bottom out of Joann’s fleece.

metroladies1

My first version was a beautiful eggplant french terry (from Raspberry Creek) hoodie version.

metroladies3

I’ve had this lightweight mustard/cream stripe in my stash and it was absolutely perfect with this eggplant.  I used it to line both the hood and the pocket.

metroladies2

I love the slim fit of this sweatshirt- not too baggy, not too tight!

I whipped up my cowl microfleece version in about a half hour after making the others.  Seriously, the cutest, quickest sew ever.  It is so cozy and I dreaded taking it off!

metrofamily7

I think we’ve found a new favorite pattern.  The big boys are feeling left out so we might need to whip up a few more real soon!

metrofamily6metrofamily4

Terri’s patterns are so clearly written and I love her clean, crisp layout.  She offers lots of tips and her tutorials make sewing a breeze even if you’re just a beginner to sewing.

Terri has graciously offered both patterns for $4 each or $8 (CAD, so us Americans will save even more!) for the bundle for a limited time.  Are you doing last minute Christmas sewing?  Or finished up and need a little selfish sew?  I’d waste no time and grab this pattern TODAY!  Pick up the kids version here or the ladies/mens here but really you should just get them both– you won’t regret it!

Another Day, Another Lane

floralhoodie1

I struggle with my relationship with fabric.  I love fun, colorful prints but tend to gravitate towards solids or simple stripes in my everyday wardrobe.  I picked up this gorgeous floral sweatshirt fabric one night from Diana.  It paired perfectly with the cobalt blue french terry I had left over from this sweatshirt. The colors are so pretty but I worried the print would be overwhelming on me.  So it sat there…

floralhoodie2

I considered another Bimaa for my girls- they usually get all the fun prints that I don’t think I can wear.  Then I found a simple sweatshirt on Pinterest that used a solid as the main body and even had contrast cuffs and hood.  Perfect compromise!

floralhoodie3

I used the Lane Raglan from Hey June (yet again).  This was my first time using the thumb hole cuffs and I love them!  I sized up a size since the floral has very little stretch.  I also added the kangaroo pocket from the Halifax Hoodie.  The result- another one of those sweatshirts that I never want to take off!

floralhoodie4

My Raglan Love Affair

raglan3

Edited: The Hey June Lane Raglan has been updated as of February 25th, 2015.  You can see my review of the new version here.  Patterns for Pirates also has a new slim fit raglan option.

I think I could wear a raglan everyday.  If you know me, you might think that I actually do.  I have long sleeve, short sleeve, three-quarter sleeves, sweatshirts, hoodies, and even a sweater knit version.  They are so fun to mix and match fabric and to add fun details like kangaroo pockets or floral bias trim neck binding.  I’m a stay-at-home mom so my ‘work’ outfits are usually all about comfort.  Because of that, I mainly sew casual clothes for myself and save the fancy stuff for my girls (less fabric, time, and let’s face it- they’re WAY cuter to sew for).

raglan8

I rarely sew a pattern over and over.  I love to try new designs and pdf designers do a fine job of keeping me busy with the latest and greatest patterns.  I only have a handful of patterns I pull out time after time.  The Lane Raglan by Hey June Handmade and the Pattern for Pirates Raglan are two of those patterns.

raglan15

My raglan love affair began with this Lane Raglan from Hey June Handmade.  Adrianna posted a similar version somewhere and I just had to copy it.  I had this yummy mustard stripe french terry from LA and this gorgeous Liberty bias trim I picked up when I was in London.  This is a size medium and I rolled the hems and tacked them up on both the sleeves and the bottom hem.  This fabric has very little stretch and the medium is a nice roomy fit.

raglan5

This lightweight jersey version with stretch lace sleeves was next.  Again a size medium with bands this time.  While I love this one, the lace is heavy and pulled the neck way too wide for me.  With a little help from the ever amazing Diana, the neckline is better and she converted me to using a much shorter neckband than what the pattern calls for.   Duh, it’s been a game changer keeping my under-things in check.

raglan4

Now enter Patterns for Pirates Raglan Bundle Pack.  Holy cow, do I love this pattern!  That button-up cowl with those big ‘ol wood buttons is pretty fantastic.  The options with this pattern are endless.  This is a non-stretch sweatshirt fleece in a size small.  It’s a little snug and I think I’d go up a size next time I use fabric this stiff.

raglan14

Then I had to make a sweater-knit version with the ruched cowl and thumbhole cuffs.  Doesn’t get much comfier than that and it’s so much more chic than a standard hoodie.

raglan13

Not that I don’t love me a good hoodie.  This version was actually made by my swap buddy, Jessie, for a monthly sewing swap I do.  It’s pretty awesome and I sure lucked out that month.  Not only did she send me this amazing version but she also tucked in two fun short sleeve versions as well.

raglan10 raglan11

Speaking of short sleeve versions, the one on the left is a cotton lycra blend with no bands and the side seams contoured in.  That super cute vinyl is from Sew Fancy iron-on vinyl on Facebook. The one on the right is a jersey knit with a banded bottom and the sleeves brought in a bit.  All of my P4P versions are a size small.  The pattern is very roomy and relaxed and I’ve never felt the need to go up or down a size except when using sweatshirt fleece.

raglan9

One of my newest favs is my Raspberry Creek Club Fabrics Lane.  If you’re anything like me, your Instagram and FB feeds are full of floral sleeved raglans right now.  You better believe I’m whipping up my own as fast as I can.

Now for a couple side-by-sides.  The Lane Raglan has a slimmer fit, hugging your curves more and creating them where you need them.  The new improved Lane now has a hood and thumb hole option which totally elevate the pattern.  And you can add the cute pocket out of your favorite fabric scrap, too! The P4P is loose and grazes those curves you might want to hide and offers more options than the Lane.  The P4P with add-on pack offers multiple sleeve and hem lengths, elbow patches, a hood, cross-over funnel hood, funnel collar, button up funnel collar, ruched funnel collar, cowl neck, kangaroo pocket and thumb hole cuffs- phew!

raglan6 raglan12

The Lane hoodie is on the left and the P4P on the right.  Don’t mind my angry gangster face, that’s totally how you’re supposed to act with your hood up right?!

raglan1raglan17

These are french terry versions.  I know they can’t all be my favorite but these are way up there.  The french terry is from Raspberry Creek Fabrics as is that amazing quilted knit (I had just enough left over from this dress). The P4P is on the left (size small) and the Lane is on the right (size medium).

raglan22 raglan21

Now these are cotton jersey versions of both in size smalls (I made the P4P version on the right for my own swap partner).  It’s easy to see the more relaxed feel of the P4P one on the right.  The angle of the sleeves are very different and each will flatter different body types.  I’ve got a smaller chest and I don’t mind the shaping of the P4P but my friend Emily swears by the angle of the Lane to flatter her curves better.

raglan20

The P4P is on the top and the Lane is on the bottom.  The sleeve angle of the Lane slims her so much, don’tcha think?  I’m amazed at how different these look on her.  She’s kinda famous for her Lane obsession but when it looks that good on you I’d make a closet full too! Thanks for letting me share these, Em!

And finally to prove just how versatile these patterns are…

raglan16

My most worn raglan this summer- a Lane rashguard.  I followed this tutorial from Dandelion Drift (she used the Hey June Union St. tee for hers, another great pattern) and added a padded shelf bra.  I used the small pattern size and brought in the sides to be snug and prevent it from creeping up while swimming.

So, if you read this post hoping I’d tell you to get one or the other, sorry!  I love both patterns and think you NEED both of them in your life pronto!  They both have different looks and options and will flatter your body in different ways.  A cozy P4P cowl neck for the cooler weather ahead would be perfect.  A sexy lace sleeved Lane for date night might wow your hubby and convince him to let you buy ALL the fabric to make a million more.

So, do you have a favorite?  A new one I should give a try?

I need to mention that I am in no way affiliated with either Patterns for Pirates or Hey June Handmade.  I think both designers just get women and you can’t go wrong with any of their patterns. Pick up these patterns here and here and feel free to look around a bit.

Hey June Hatteras Hoodie X3

hatterashoodiepair3

I’ve been pattern testing a lot lately and while I enjoy it, I’ve gotten more selective on what projects I’ll undertake and sign up for.  I rarely will sew anything that takes more than a couple of hours- I try my hardest to sew only during naptime and I hate leaving unfinished projects.  That said, there are still certain designers I jump at the chance to test for and Adrianna of Hey June is one of them.  Her latest pattern is really three patterns in one and it is fantastic!

IMG_8964

I made view C in a size 12 for my eleven-year-old.  We both love, love this hoodie.  He picked out the french terry and it was perfect for this pattern.  I sew a ton but there are still so many techniques that I’ve never done (meaning I’ve avoided them as long as possible ).  This was my first zippered jacket and Adrianna walks you through it beautifully and the finish on the inside is so profesh!

IMG_1716

IMG_1809

I proudly held up the finished sweatshirt to my husband and said, “You’ve got to see this!” To which he said. “Oh yeah, I saw that.  I totally thought you bought that so I didn’t say anything.”  I’ll take that as “that-sweatshirt-is-incredibly-well-made-and-looks-like-a-million-bucks” and all the glory goes to Adrianna’s impeccable finishing techniques that make the inside as clean and pretty as the outside.

hatterashoodie4

Sophie got view A in a size 7 out of yummy sweater knit from LA.  It’s got a touch of my favorite knock-off Liberty print as the facing.  With Sophie, I’ve decided that if I would wear it then she would love it too.  She is my mini-me in so many ways and I love that we share almost the exact taste in clothes.  I’ll live it up while I can.

hatterashoodie5

IMG_1806

I love this picture I caught of the two of them- totally their personalities.  Alex is always a crack-up and Soph has got this model thing down.

hatterashoodiepair2

After the two I tested I couldn’t wait to recreate a hoodie I’d seen on Pinterest.

inspiration

My version-

hatterashack5

I used view A and sized up two sizes for ease, leaving off the bands.  I used a mystery gauzy-linen that had some give to it and it was exactly what I was going for.

hattereahack4

hatterashack3

hatterashack2

It just reminds me so much of growing up in Southern California.  It’s made for bonfires at the beach and cool summer nights. This one is my favorite and I want it in my size so badly! We’re twisting Adrianna’s arm to get a ladies version out pronto!
